With doors wide open.  There's a sense of trust and security that prevails in Kalaupapa, Moloka`i. It's like being transported back in time to the days that my folks fondly recalled; days when you knew all of your neighbors, crime was something that happened someplace else but not here, and no one locked their doors. Day #2 of Kajukenbo. We learned the basic strikes and blocks and although it wasn't a real work out, I found my legs Jell-O'ing from being in horse stance. It'll be a long road back into getting in condition again... This may sound awfully odd, but feeling that old familiar burn on my thighs was somewhat exciting. It tells me that I'm making an effort to do something that is slightly out of my current comfort zone and that is thrilling in itself. I hope that I can keep this positive attitude about it longer than a month. :P The hard part is staying motivated even when it loses its "newness."

Kalaupapa: True Beauty. The first Kalaupapa entry, where I share my thoughts and impressions of my recent trip to the peninsula. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that it was a life-changing experience for me and I am so very thankful that I had the opportunity to go. [more]

At this rate, I'll never catch up. I already have 3 pending entries to write which I'm hoping to do before August turns into September. Old, stale content is never fun. Oh me, oh my.

In the meantime, here's an image from this past Saturday's Obon Dance at the Jikoen Temple:

Yes, that's me in the beige okeiko gi (practice uniform). Thanks to Hubby for being the photographer that night.

Anyway, I hope to be able to write an actual entry instead of cheating by means of the blog. There's so much to tell you, just so little time to sit down and jot it down. I better hurry up and post some entries before this weekend because I expect to have more content generated on Friday and Saturday -- which means, more catching up to do! Aye carumba!

Yes, I'm alive... though very much exhausted. Still recovering from my travels and finding that I am lacking the energy to post a decent entry. I don't want to rush my thoughts on Kalaupapa to print since it was such a very special experience for me. I feel that I should post with more care than I am able to expend right now. I started my Kalaupapa daily pictorial series on eyeCANDY, so you can grab up little gems along the way until I get the energy to deliver the whole package.

I also attended a Bon Dance this past weekend with Hubby, Joyce, Mahealani and Bryan and caught some interesting visuals. Yes, I know... more promises.

Tonight, Hubby and I attended our first Kajukenbo class. We only learned etiquette tonight (how to enter/exit the dojo, how to get into ready stance, and how to end the class), but expect to actually learn some basic techniques on Wednesday. By the time we're fifty, I expect to have run the gamut in terms of martial arts experience. This is the 7th martial art that I'm taking for a test drive. I am hoping that Kajukenbo will suit me. I really need to firm up my flabby muscles. 28 years of gravity is taking its toll on my body and I only expect it to get worse. That's where exercise comes in... Now the only three ingredients I need are 1) Time, 2) Discipline, and 3) Desire.

Welps, tired beyond belief. Time for bed. Oyasumi!

I'll be updating the eyeCANDY portion of the site again. I have lots of photos to share in the upcoming days, but I'm hoping that I'll be able to set aside the 5 minutes per day to update it. :P
