Neuro Fuzzy. "Neuro Fuzzy" sounds like a great name for an alternative band. Actually, Neuro Fuzzy is the technology behind my new fancy-shmancy Zojirushi rice cooker. It claims to cook the perfect pot of rice every time, but what sold me was the fact that it's supposed to be the best at cooking brown rice, which we've been eating for a while now for its health benefits. The rice cooker I had before didn't handle brown rice very well and it would always make a big mess; brown rice takes about 1.5 times as much water as cooking white rice and it would splash all over the place when it's cooking.
Did I mention that this rice cooker is on sale at Marukai right now? That's the best part of all.

Friday retrospective. There's nothing better on a Friday afternoon than a 2-mile walk along tree-lined streets. I've started walking again this week and I've found that I have more energy and feel better, both physically and mentally. I can wake up early in the morning without slapping the snooze button for another 15 minutes of slumber. I've been waking up about 45-minutes earlier than usual and I have even been doing my devotions (read 3 chapters in the Bible) first thing in the morning instead of as the last thing I do in the day like I usually did. If I can wake up an hour earlier than usual, maybe I can even squeeze breakfast in -- or a short walk around the neighborhood to get the blood moving before work. Well, now that's being a little ambitious...

Incentive. I've said it before and I'll say it again: I'm a total geek. I just totally love gadgets, electronics, and technology. As a result of this fascination, I get along with the guys in my office quite well. We're always coveting some new digital camera, photo printer, video card, or attachable Palm module. We beam Visor games to one another and we're always researching the latest and greatest thing on the market, comparing notes and trying to fit these nifty toys into our budget. [more]

Wishy-washy? Here it is, the end of May. Back in April, I told you that I was heading back to school. I was enrolled in my first class CSS/335 (Computers and Information Processing), set to go on June 13, 2002. But... [more]

No, this isn't a shrine to the epicurean gods. This is how I always set up my kitchen when onions are in my recipe. I have extremely sensitive eyes and will immediately start to tear from the first cut of an onion. However, Joyce was kind enough to research this problem and found the solution on the Internet: Candles.
The candle flame pulls air from around it and sends it up the smoke plume, taking all of those nasty airborne onion juices and chemicals that go with it. It's surprisingly effective, but I've found that it takes more than one candle to do the trick... thus, the 3 candles that you see pictured. Heck, it works and I also like to use scented candles, so it also gives me a nice aromatherapy effect as I'm cooking.
[This has been your public service announcement for the day.] :-)
Do you have trouble with onions? What do you do to avoid the teary eyes? Any other cooking tips to share?

Zen humor. Sure, I know, this made its rounds in and out of your In-Box a few times already, but I enjoyed it. Before I delete this from my In-Box (yes, still purging), I picked out a few of my favorites and will post them here.
In Japan, they are considering replacing the impersonal & unhelpful Microsoft Error messages with Haiku poetry messages. Haiku poetry has strict construction rules. Each poem has only three lines, 17 syllables = 5 syllables in the 1st line, 7 in the 2nd, 5 in the 3rd.
Haiku is used to communicate a timeless message often achieving a wistful, yearning & powerful insight through extreme brevity - the essence of Zen.
Serious error. All shortcuts have disappeared. Screen. Mind. Both are blank. The Website you seek Cannot be located, but Countless more exist. Chaos reigns within. Reflect, repent, and reboot. Order shall return. Windows NT crashed. I am the Blue Screen of Death. No one hears your screams. Yesterday it worked. Today it is not working. Windows is like that. A crash reduces Your expensive computer To a simple stone. Three things are certain: Death, taxes and lost data. Guess which has occurred. Having been erased, The document you're seeking Must now be retyped.

The coming of summer... The weather is still and humid today, the skies are slightly overcast and threatening rain. Fans are blowing in every room around my house to circulate the heavy air. Quickly approaching the summer months, I can only expect more of the same... hot and humid weather that makes me want to melt into a puddle. The prospect of buying an air conditioner seems to grow more and more viable by the day. Shhhhh! (Hubby, you didn't read that!)
I must remember to be thankful, however. Our weather is quite mild, considering the scorching heat waves of India, the sweltering humidity of Guam, or the freezing winters of Minnesota. I am thankful that we can survive without the aid of heating systems or air conditioners (although, candidly, air conditioners make things quite nice).
As they say, "lucky you live Hawaii." Ain't that the truth?

Congratulations, Kory and Al! Congratulations to my childhood pal Kory and her husband Al, on the newest addition to their family: Amanda Paige Maeko Mattos. She was born on Tuesday, May 21, 2002 at 4:15 am.
It seems to be the year for births, doesn't it? Can someone send me the Fertility Bug, please?

Following in the footsteps of Kogepan, I mean Lucky Kat. ;-) Here's my results:
You have a few close friends that you are comfortable with, but can get along with anyone. You have an exceptional sweet tooth for candy with a personality to match. If you can't brighten up someone's day, no one can!
