Pineapple Island Adventures. After writing yesterday's entry last night, I attempted to get some sleep. It was approximately 10:00 pm when my head hit the pillow, but it wasn't until quite a while later that I actually fell asleep. There's something about sleeping in a strange bed that makes it difficult for me to sleep.
Thoughts flooded my mind from all directions, as it always does when I'm experiencing a rare episode of insomnia. Of course, this makes it even more difficult to get to sleep since once my mind is racing. It's about as effective as drinking a double-shot of espresso as a nightcap. [more]

Lanai City, Lanai. [Blogged on 10.26.2001, 9:15 pm HST; remastered and reformatted with photos for your viewing pleasure.] I arrived in Lanai City this afternoon, this time accompanied by my folks. My Father was born and raised here on the Pineapple Island, living on Block 20 and working on the plantation. He left Lanai over thirty years ago to marry my mother who lived on Oahu and hasn’t been back since. [more]
* If you've already read the Blogged version, you should still check this out since I've included photos from the trip that wasn't initially included.

I AM 30% GEEK.

I bet Derek would score pretty darned close to 100% Geek. (He'll probably have to answer "no" to a few of them -- but probably only the ones that pertain to personal hygiene...

Home Sweet Hustle-and-Bustle. Back to the hustle-and-bustle of Honolulu after spending a nice, peaceful day in Lanai. I took nearly 200 photos during my 24-hours on Lanai, so we'll see how many are actually winners. I'll post a photo journal entry sometime this afternoon, so please check back again!

Lanai City. Flying to Lanai today -- on a Dash-8. I'll be taking my folks with me on this business trip so that my Dad can see his old hometown again. It's been over 30 years since he last visited Lanai. We'll be staying the night and doing some sightseeing. I hope it's everything that he remembers it to be...

Scenes from Honokaa, Big Island. My business trip to the Hamakua Coast yesterday allowed me to take some photos from around the quaint town of Honokaa, having stopped there for lunch. Enjoy the photos! Part II of Thursday, 10.25.2001 entry.

Unisex restrooms at the Hilo Airport? I know where practically every restroom is in the Hilo Airport now. This is a direct result of having the world's smallest bladder (or at least this is what I've been told). Before catching my Honolulu-bound flight today, I took my usual trip to the women's restroom inside the gate area. After doing my business and exiting the stall, the door across the way opened and a MAN walked out.
Startled, I thought for a brief moment that perhaps I had walked into the men's restroom by mistake. After all, this short, middle-aged local Japanese man looked like he belonged in there. He didn't look weird or like he was up to no good, like peeping at me peeing or anything -- and I probably wouldn't have looked at him askance except for the fact that he was in the Ladies' Room.
Then I remembered that the Men's Room is actually closed for construction inside the gate area. Men had to exit the gate area to use the restroom just outside the security check point. Of course, this poses an inconvenience to them because once you leave the secured area, you must go through security once again to re-enter: check your ticket and ID, walk through the metal detector, get scanned with the wand, and perhaps frisked if you're lucky.
Maybe he was just lazy or didn't want to go through the hassle. However, seeing a male in the women's restroom is unnerving at best. I should've screamed bloody murder at the sight of him. That'll teach him not to use the Ladies' Room again. At least next time, he should post a "guard" at the door who would warn women before they enter that a weenie is in a non-weenie zone.
HEL-LO! This is not a unisex bathroom! Does this look like the set of Ally McBeal to you?

Just Tired. Sorry, I've been largely MIA the past several days. That can be attributed to my tiredness (or laziness?), this humid weather, and the general feeling that I don't really have anything "interesting" to say. Although I must thank Wendy at twodolla.org who found my Miss Cleo rant amusing enough to mention on her Blog that sent a few hits my way.
Just an update on what's been going on here...
I flew to Kona yesterday and Hilo today and, thankfully, didn't find myself with the Scarlet Letter on my ticket, so I've been relatively unbothered by the security checks this week -- so far. I've still got tomorrow (Hilo, Hawaii) and Friday (Lanai City, Lanai), so we'll see!
The big news of the week is the birth of Michelle's baby girl! She was born on Sunday, October 21 and her name is Caitlin! Welcome to the world, Caitlin and congratulations to Mom and Dad -- Michelle & Nick!

Early to bed, early to rise... Tomorrow morning my alarm will go off at prompty 3:30 AM. Yes, an ungodly hour indeed. I'm taking another trip to the Kona side of the Big Island for training and our plane leaves quite early. I won't tell you when since for all I know, you could be stalking me. (Uh-huh...)
I have that odd flighty/floaty sensation of the onset of a cold, which I am trying to combat with Centrum daily vitamins and doses of Echinacea. (I depleted my Vitamin C supply, so I'm a little worried.) I hope that I can keep it at bay since I've got quite a bit of traveling to do this week and can't afford to be feeling under the weather.
It's time for me to get to bed. I need all the rest I can get, especially since I need to wake up extra early tomorrow. Oyasumi!

Miss Cleo. I keep getting e-mail from Miss Cleo. (You know, she's the black psychic lady on TV with the funky accent that I can't quite place.) She keeps telling me that she's drawn up some interesting Tarot Cards regarding my future that I would be interested in. Then she gives me her phone number for a free 3-minute psychic reading.
Now, if she were really the clairvoyant that she claims to be, she wouldn't be spamming me with e-mail because she knows that I'm completely uninterested and think that Tarot Cards and Psychic Friends are completely bogus.
But you know, to each his own.
You'd think a bunch of "psychics" would be better at target marketing and send their advertisements to someone who actually cares.
[/end sarcastic rant]

What you're looking for. More amusing keywords people are typing in search engines to stumble upon my site:
Yahoo: "hubby doesn't mind" Yahoo: automated+sanitary+toilet+seat Yahoo: hagatna swimming pool
There's also a great deal of searches for "WTC" or "shocking pictures" of the September 11 attacks. It seems that there is still a morbid fascination with last month's tragedy.

Champuru Quick Movie Review. Iron Monkey, starring Yu Rong Guang, Donnie Yen, Jean Wang Ching Ying. Champuru Rating: * * * * * (5 out of 5 stars!)
A 1993 Chinese movie belatedly released in American theatres, Iron Monkey is kung-fu fighting action at its best. From the Action choreographer of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and The Matrix, Yuen Wo Ping brings yet another cinematic masterpiece of brilliantly choreographed fight scenes with amazing wirework and martial arts acrobatics.
The movie is subtitled, much to my delight, as I prefer watching foreign films in its original language -- yes, even kung fu flicks. There's something unsettling about watching a kung fu movie where everyone has a faux British accent.
Iron Monkey was not particularly bloody or violent, although a lot of people get their butts kicked (albeit gracefully) in the duration of the movie. It's also nice not to have the gratuitous nudie shots or sex scenes to disrupt the flow of the film. (I often find that these scenes are mostly superfluous to the plot. Wait a sec, kung fu movies have a plot?)
Speaking of plots, Iron Monkey is pretty good about this. It's not the typical, "you killed my brother, now I must take revenge" or the "you killed my sifu, now I must take revenge" kung fu theatre plots. It's a likeable story and it will endear you to the characters. I won't give it away, so this is all you get about the plot. Want to know more? Check out the official website.
You can rent the video at Blockbuster, but there's something about seeing it in a theatre that makes it so much better. I highly recommend it. If you liked Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, you'll love Iron Monkey.
Just one question: Why does it take so long for these great movies to get released in America?
