29 hit me today.
[Blogged on 09.06.2002, 7:11 a.m. HST]
One year away from the big 3-0. Time seems to fly at an unbelievable rate of speed and increasingly so with every passing year. As I get older, I can't help but to realize that so are my parents (who are in their 70's) and I really dislike coming to terms with our own mortality. Nevertheless, it's inevitable, I know. For some reason, birthdays aren't as fun as they were when we were 5, when all we had were carefree tomorrows to look forward to.

I have to mention, though, that Arnold was nice enough to take me and Jan to lunch at Chibo (my favorite restaurant!) yesterday since we were doing some work at a nearby office in Waikiki. Of course, the Chibo gang felt it was their duty to introduce me to half of the restaurant and sing a rousing rendition of "Happy Birthday" to me. And as expected, I had my usual: Bacon with Mochi and Cheese Okonomiyaki and a glass of Calpico. You can never go wrong with a lunch at Chibo.

Anyway, it's time to get ready for work...

For some reason, 29 feels odd. Or maybe it's just my imagination.

Serendipitous Birthday. This year's birthday was full of little surprises and lots of eating. Just a few of the things that made my 29th birthday so special:

  • Thursday lunch: Okonomiyaki Chibo Restaurant with Arnold and Jan. (Bacon with Mochi & Cheese Okonomiyaki - of course!)

  • An autographed CD from Jake Shimabukuro from Lindy and Glen.

  • Friday lunch: Sugoi with the shigoto fambly. Mmmm... karai (spicy) garlic chicken!

  • A long distance phone call from my favorite cousin, the Hollywood filmmaker, to wish me a happy birthday. I was truly touched that he remembered my birthday.

  • Joyce's generosity never ceases to amaze me. (A beautiful flower lei to wear on my birthday at work, a Tempurpedic pillow, a cute little  retro-looking desk fan from Brookstone, and a gift certificate for a Shiatsu massage! She has truly outdone herself!)

  • Saturday lunch: Okonomiyaki Chibo Restaurant with my folks. Having the entire staff at Chibo sing happy birthday to me at the top of their lungs, using pots, pans and utensils as noise-makers -- freaking out the demure Japanese tourists in the restaurant.

  • Receiving cards via snail mail, e-mail, and  e-Cards from friends. (Thanks everybunny!)

  •  Saturday dinner: Ninnukuya with the Hubby. (OH! The Filet Mignon was the best I've ever eaten! And the Riesling went straight to my head, I'm afraid.)

Thanks to everyone who went out of their way to make me feel so special on my birthday. Like April said, I better enjoy my 20's while I still have one left.
