A blading we will go. My
rollerblades have not seen the light of day in a couple of years. In fact, I
almost couldn't find them when I finally wanted to take them out of retirement
last night. Luckily, from under a pile of rubble in the garage closet, they
were resurrected. Dusted off and oiled, they were restored to their former glory. I
noticed that the rivets on my kneepads were starting to rust, but luckily, the
wheels on my blades were still in good shape. I lightly oiled them and them
seemed to be as good as new. Shari
and I decided to check out the new park in Waipio since it looked like a good
place to go blading since it's not too crowded and it has long pathways, ideal
for walking, running or blading. The
idea is not to run the pedestrians off the sidewalk. I'm sure runners/walkers
look at us as the bane of their existence, but we really try not to be too
obtrusive and will go out of our way to get out of theirs. It was quite
amusing since Shari has trouble stopping (no brakes!) and often has to resort
to rolling onto the grass in order to stop, lest she roll headlong into an
unsuspecting jogger.
Even
a small decline in the path will cause rollerblades to roll quite fast. This
is one of the things that I find most fun about blading; the breeze on my face
and the wind blowing through my hair... I feel so free! Shari,
on the other hand, worries about falling -- or worse yet, crashing into
something or someone. Especially today since she forgot her knee
pads.
So
as we descended hills, she would often opt to roll onto the grass to stop the
momentum. Along
this particular path, Shari found herself loosing control and ended up
crashing into the black construction fence.
Watch out! Don't let this happen to you! Okay,
so it didn't really happen this way. But we thought it would make a
funny picture anyway. (She did crash into the fence, but not quite so
dramatically.) Here's
a picture of Shari that I really like because of the horizontal lines of the
bleachers. I thought it made for a visually interesting photo. Aside from
that, Shari is my photogenic friend who looks good in every picture that she
takes (unlike me!).
Unfortunately, we
didn't have much daylight to work with today and ended up only blading for
about an hour before the sun started to set on us -- and the security guard
chased us out of the parking lot to lock the gate. I
always have a great time with Shari. She helps me to laugh more and throw my
cares to the wind for a time. She's good at loosening me up making me feel how
good it is to be carefree.
