Donna can cook!
Despite my geekiness and tendency to sit for hours on end in front of my computer, I can actually do something in the kitchen!

Browning the fish.

Fried Ahi* in Soy Sauce

*I'm using Marlin today, since Safeway didn't have Ahi

1 lb. Ahi (yellow fin tuna), cut into 4 filets
Salt & pepper
2 Tbsp salad oil
3 Tbsp soy sauce
3 Tbsp dashi (soup stock)
2 tsp mirin (sweet rice wine) or sugar
Shredded won bok, watercress or lettuce

Season fish with the salt and pepper. In a skillet, heat oil. Brown fish on both sides and remove from pan.  *Add soy sauce, dashi, and mirin to skillet; bring to a boil. Return fish to skillet; coat with sauce and cook for a few seconds. Serve on a bed of vegetables. Makes 4 servings.

*Notes from the Chef: When you're adding the additional ingredients to the pan, be careful and be sure to lower the heat. Adding other ingredients to the hot oil causes big time splatters! Ouchie!

The finished product with a few of the ingredients.
Viola! :)

Bucks v. Brains — 13 January 2002

If you had the opportunity to become either the richest or smartest person in the world, which would you chose?

I would elect to be the richest person in the world.

Oh, the Materialism! *gasp!*  No, give me a chance to expound on this before you jump to your conclusions.

With money, I can benefit others in a more tangible way.

With money, I can also afford more educational opportunities which would make me smarter (theoretically), although not the smartest in the world -- but I don't feel the need to be a Nobel Prize winner anyway.

With money, I can donate to worthy causes, further the gospel, purchase some land and a building for my church, support missionaries, take care of my family (make them all debt-free!), and establish scholarship funds.

Besides that, I could enjoy life with Hubby, absolutely carefree... traveling all over the world, seeing the sights, experiencing other cultures and simply reveling in the new adventures that await us! Imagine -- never having another worry about financial matters! That in itself would be pure bliss!

I could provide so many more opportunities for my child (if/when I ever get pregnant!)...

So yes, I would chose bucks over brains. So, sue me. (I can afford it.)

Me & HubbyThis photo was taken by Julie yesterday at Okonomiyaki Chibo Restaurant with Paul's Olympus digital SLR camera. That camera kicks some serious booty, although it's somewhat large and cumbersome. It does take some pretty awesome photos, though (as evidenced on Julie and Paul's respective web sites).

I often thought that I would like to get a digital SLR, but after holding one in my hot little hands, the sheer power and complexity of it instantly boggled my feeble mind and rendered me incapable of taking a shot even though I really wanted to. Instead, I simply looked at it, absolutely dumbfounded, and quickly handed it off to Derek. Wuss!

Oh, by the way, Hubby wasn't wearing a Kikaida mask to the restaurant. That was done in post (as you smart people probably already guessed) -- but as you know, Hubby prefers to remain anonymous on the Net. Besides, he is my very own Japanese super hero! (He can even play Jiro's song on the guitar -- well, at least the first few notes anyway...)

"Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others."

::Gratitudes::
©
I'm grateful for all of the blessings that the Lord has provided (both tangible and intangible), my health and that of my family, our safety, and the basics in life that are so easily taken for granted (i.e., food, shelter, and clothing).
© I'm also grateful for the Rice Bowl Journals discussion board where I've had the opportunity to meet and exchange ideas with some really nice people.
